I have a digital copy of the protocol manual. Many hvac systems do not provide a 24v wire, which means potentially fishing that wire through your walls. Note that the RC-81 requires 24vac supplied from hvac system. The RC-81 is a rs-232 programmable thermostat.

It does not use batteries. This is compatible with some home automation kits. I never got around to automating it and switched an Einstein thermostat.
