I found the manual on line heretic controls. The inner mounting base is bakelite, looks like it was used on many thermostats long before this one, the bakelite base is mounted in a steel and aluminum structure.

The bakelite base is stamped T42K 1084 1je4 the 1084 may be a date code. PHP dispatch attachments. Exact item shown older Honeywell t42 thermostat, as shown. Nobody uses mercury switches any more, so that helps date it.

There is one mercury switch that engages on falling temperature, so that is for heating.
